Some say the name of the herbal remedy comes from the Latin Valere that means to be healthy; others say that it comes from the Latin Valere that means courage. It is a perennial medicinal herb, witch usually has small flowers; there are 13 genera and more than 400 species. They usually grow in temperate regions at an altitude of 0 to 4653 meters, but there are some exceptions (Australia, the Andes of South America).

 

Some say that their original use was as the perfume, even food.

 

Uses:

For many centuries, this herbal remedy, valerian, is used as a Sedative for and for the insomnia. Several famous authors have referred to it in that aspect. Isabel Allende, for example, says in her book Aphrodite that valerian in small doses can be used as a stimulant, but in major dose it causes astonishment.

 

Preparation: 
The roots of valerian should be collected in spring and autumn, and should only be boiled for a few minutes. Is advised not to take root when they are still green.

 

Other details:

In India, valerian is used for the treat of epilepsy, hysteria, convulsive disease, palpitation of the heart, diseases of the eye, itching, swelling, diseases of the head, also consumed it to treat liver and kidney, and some species helps to cure snake bites. In China this herbal medicine is used in infusion with liquor to ease the back pain, numbness, colds, menstrual problems, bruises and wounds.

 

Valerian is also used for baths of perfume and for hair’s diseases.
